Acarbose

Acarbose is used to manage type-2 diabetes in adults.

Acarbose helps reduce blood sugar levels and may aid in reducing weight gain associated with certain anti-diabetics. This medication may be used with other anti-diabetic medications, a healthy diet, and regular exercise.

Acarbose lowers blood sugar (glucose) levels by slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates into simple sugars that can be absorbed by the body.

As a result, blood sugar levels are lower after meals. Acarbose accomplishes this by interfering with enzymes (proteins that control the rate of certain activities in the body) involved in carbohydrate digestion.

You may experience:

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Flatulence

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) When used with other anti-diabetic medications, blood sugar levels can get very low, which can manifest as dizziness, confusion, mood swings, numbness, shakiness, or headaches.

Stomach disturbances may be reduced by following the recommended diet.

  • Foods high in simple sugars such as sugar cane and beet can worsen stomach disturbances associated with acarbose.

Carbohydrate-rich meals like bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice can be spread throughout the day to help alleviate stomach upset.

  • Alcohol can cause very low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). Alcohol should therefore be taken in moderation and on a full stomach.

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Because of the danger of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) when taking acarbose with other anti-diabetic medicines, you should exercise caution.

Before driving, check your blood glucose level and keep dextrose (or a sugary beverage) on hand.

Acarbose isn’t addictive.

Acarbose hasn’t been shown to affect sexual performance, fertility or contraceptives.

You should avoid acarbose if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
