Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is used to manage pain, inflammation (pain and swelling), and fever. Aspirin can be prescribed for menstrual cramps, migraines, joint pain, muscle pain, the flu, and colds.
Aspirin shouldn’t be used in children less than 16 years of age.
Pain and swelling are due to the activity of chemicals known as prostaglandins at the site of injury. Prostaglandins increase pain sensitivity.
Proteins known as COX help in the production of prostaglandins. Aspirin blocks the action of COX.
You may experience:
Abdominal pain
Loss of appetite
Heartburn
Diarrhea
Constipation
Flatulence
You can eat normally when taking aspirin. It is advisable to take aspirin after meals or with meals.
You should avoid excessive alcohol intake. Stomach irritation may be experienced when alcohol is consumed with aspirin.
If you need to take more aspirin to manage your pain, take subsequent doses four hours apart. Do not exceed 4 grams in 24 hours.
Aspirin can interact with a number of medications. Make a list of all your medications and show it to our pharmacist or doctor before taking aspirin.
Without permission from your doctor or pharmacist, you should avoid aspirin if you are an asthmatic, have ulcers, or have experienced a stroke or heart attack. Aspirin can worsen stomach ulcers. It can also increase your chances of having a heart attack or having a stroke.
If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.
If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.
If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.
Aspirin hasn’t been demonstrated to interfere with sexual function, fertility or contraceptives.
Aspirin can cause harm to your unborn baby. You should avoid aspirin during pregnancy unless prescribed by your doctor.
Aspirin is passed into your breast milk. Aspirin may not be safe for your baby. You should inform your pharmacist or doctor before taking aspirin when breastfeeding.
You can safely use paracetamol for pain during pregnancy.
