Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat chest, skin, nose, ear, throat, and some sexually transmitted infections. It is available as a capsule, tablet, eye drops, or liquid (suspension to be used orally).
Keep suspensions in a refrigerator and discard them after 7 days or as directed by the manufacturer.
You must not take any antibiotics without a prescription. This will lead to bacteria getting used to how antibiotics work and making treatment of subsequent infections difficult.
Azithromycin works by interfering with the production of necessary proteins in microorganisms. This restricts the growth of bacteria.
You may experience:
Nausea
Diarrhea You should drink a lot of water when experiencing diarrhea to avoid dehydration.
Loss of appetite
Dizziness
Change of taste
Thrush
Some people may develop fungal growth in their mouths (babies) or the vagina. For treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Don’t abruptly stop taking any medications. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if any side effects of medications become unbearable.
You may eat normally while taking azithromycin. You should take azithromycin one hour before or two hours after meals.
Talk to your doctor if you have taken an injection for typhoid fever within the last week or intend to within the same week of starting azithromycin. Azithromycin can make the vaccine ineffective.
If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.
If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.
If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.
You should take antibiotics for the duration prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better before the end of the given period.
This completely clears the infection and prevents bacteria from developing mechanisms against medications.
Azithromycin has no effect on sexual performance or the effectiveness of contraceptives. Azithromycin has not been shown to affect fertility.
If you are taking azithromycin for a sexually transmitted infection, avoid sexual activities till you and your partner have been treated.
Azithromycin is considered safe for use in pregnancy.
Azithromycin is found in breast milk in very small amounts. It is considered safe to take when breastfeeding.
Observe for baby. If your baby develops oral thrush or isn’t feeding well, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
