Betamethasone

Betamethasone is used to treat itching, swelling, redness associated with inflammation and allergies. It is also useful in treating asthma and arthritis (inflammation of the bones).

It is available as creams, eye drops, lotions, foams, plasters, ointments, tablets or injections.

Betamethasone is similar to hormones (corticosteroid) produced in the body.

Betamethasone reduces the immune (defense) response of your body to help control itching, swelling and redness.

You are unlikely to experience side effects with betamethasone preparations used on skin. Long term use on the skin may cause slight irritation.

When using eye preparations, you may experience:

  • Irritation of the eye

  • Blurred vision

When using nasal preparations, you may experience:

  • Nosebleeds

  • Headaches

  • Irritation of the nose

You may eat normally while taking betamethasone.

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

There are no restrictions to driving and operating machinery when using betamethasone.

If you use eye preparations and experience any vision problems, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Betamethasone isn’t addictive.

Betamethasone has not been shown to affect sexual performance, fertility or contraceptives.

Betamethasone hasn’t been proven to be harmful in humans when used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if it is applied on the body surfaces or topically (skin).

Minimal amount of medications are absorbed into the blood when it is not swallowed or injected.

Your doctor may still prescribe the lowest dose for a short period for the safety of your baby, if it is necessary.
