It is advisable to reduce eating spicy food, drinking alcohol, smoking, and stress because they can cause or worsen ulcers.
Cimetidine prevents the production of acid in your stomach and allows ulcers (sores) to heal.
Stomach acid (HCl) is required to digest food. Excess acid can however irritate the walls of the stomach and cause pains.
The stomach has a protective covering to protect against damage caused by stomach acid. Smoking and certain pain medications (aspirin, diclofenac, aceclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen) can affect the function of the protective covering and lead to ulcers.
Ulcers can also be caused by infections by microorganisms (Helicobacter pylori). An antibiotic may be added to cimetidine to treat ulcers if an infection is suspected.
