Levothyroxine

Levothyroxine is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). People with an underactive thyroid experience weight gain and feeling cold.

The thyroid is an organ that produces hormones and located in the neck region. The hormones produced by the thyroid control your temperature, heart rate, brain development, and other important body functions.

When you have an underactive thyroid, your thyroid produces less thyroid hormones. Levothyroxine is a substitute for thyroid hormones.

You may experience:

  • Headache

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Nausea

  • Muscle cramps

  • You may eat normally while taking levothyroxine.

  • Caffeine (tea, coffee, carbonated drinks) and calcium (cheese, milk, yogurt) can affect how well your body absorbs levothyroxine. It is advisable to wait some hours (~4 hours) before you eat these foods

  • You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have

    • High blood pressure
    • Chest pain (angina)
    • Heart failure
    • Diabetes

If you forget to take your prescription, take it as soon as you remember.

If you miss a dose, don’t take a double dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the next one.

Levothyroxine doesn’t impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Levothyroxine isn’t addictive.

Levothyroxine doesn’t affect the effectiveness of contraceptives, fertility or sexual function.

Contraceptives that contain estrogen can affect levothyroxine levels in your body. You can talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you need to take both medicines.

Your doctor may prescribe levothyroxine when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Don’t take levothyroxine when breastfeeding without the consent of your doctor.

You should observe your baby and inform your doctor or pharmacist if you notice poor feeding or any concerns.
